Cells

Continuing with our theme of 1600s, we discovered that Robert Hook discovered Cells in 1653.

Appropriately we decided to continue with our theme and learn about cells, we made a presentation for the science group using PowerPoint which the kids did a great job of choosing the relevant pictures and inserting them onto the powerpoint slides, I helped them with the writing and they did some copy and paste from things we found online.

We have started to make a video of the kids narrating the slides which has been great fun and there have been many takes, not sure if we will ever finish it as it will also need editing, we will have a go at it as we have done movie editing before in microsoft movie maker and had great fun last time, but this is what we have done so far... 





For learning about cells we have looked at quite a few resources.

We played a video about cells to introduce them to what cells look like.


Then we played the Bill Nye The Science Guy Video to learn a little about what cells are and what they do.



We then started to create a powerpoint presentation which the twins devised and created with a little help from me of course. You are welcome to download this if you so desire,just click on the picture below.

They searched online for appropriate pictures taking points from the Bill Nye Video. They found worksheets that have blank cells on that they could colour in and label themselves and word searches and vocabulary sheets amongst many other things.

We have found a place locally that sells Methylene Blue Microscopy Stain so we can look at some onion, cheek and maybe egg cells under our microscope.

Oh I almost forgot we also demonstrated Osmosis with a balloon

You get a balloon, put some vanilla extract in and fasten the balloon, give it a little shake and soon you should start to smell the vanilla extract, this is Osmosis as the particles of the vanilla extract are smaller than the balloon membrane. (Osmosis is the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane.
